Read these frequently asked questions to learn more about the Emergency Department at Akoma Specialist Hospital.
The department is staffed with emergency medicine physicians and nurses, physician assistants, technicians, CNAs, and unit coordinators, as well as experts from the laboratories, cardiology, respiratory, and radiology departments.
When you are admitted to the hospital, you will stay there until your inpatient room is ready. You will receive a visit from your admitting doctor during one of their scheduled “patient rounds.”
All patients are first triaged by an ER nurse, then evaluated by a physician. Patients with a higher acuity of illness (i.e. heart attack or stroke) may be treated before those with less severe conditions (laceration, sprained ankle, etc.). Your patience is always appreciated.
Although we do our utmost to ensure the safety of your personal possessions, valuables, money and cell phones, these items are kept on our premises completely at your own risk. We cannot accept responsibility for any loss or damage to your personal property. Please enquire with the nursing unit manager regarding the safe lock-up of any valuables.
Yes, usually — but the number of visitors in the emergency treatment area is kept to a minimum. Occasionally, visitors will be asked to remain in the ED lobby until your loved one is settled into their room. Usually, two visitors per patient are allowed in most areas, giving the emergency team space to work quickly and effectively while maintaining privacy. Every effort is made to keep your loved ones informed of your condition.
